Dr. Debra Vidali’s undergraduate course visited the Etowah Mounds. Home to several thousand Native Americans from 1000 A.D. to 1550 A.D., this 54-acre site protects six earthen mounds, a plaza, village site, borrow pits and defensive ditch. Etowah Mounds is the most intact Mississippian Culture site in the Southeast.
Dr. Vidali’s Class Visits New Echota
Dr. Debra Vidali’s undergraduate class visited New Echota. New Echota was the Cherokee Nation capital in 1825 and the starting point of the 1838 Trail of Tears. Also the location of Cherokee Phoenix, the first newspaper published by Native Americans, and in a Native American language.

The Anthropology Department successfully hosted a lively Showcase on Native American issues on Tuesday November 8th. Students in Emory University’s Indigenous Peoples of North America course presented their enlightening projects exploring public education and social justice applications on Native American histories, identities and present day controversies including the #DakotaAccessPipeline and #WaterisLife movement. The class had the opportunity to present to an audience from the Emory community and beyond, including the President Dr. Claire Sterk and Senior Vice President Ajay Nair.
The event was followed by an animated discussion.

The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position to begin August 2017. While we are seeking an Assistant Professor, in unusual circumstances we will also consider applicants at the Associate Professor rank. We seek a scholar who specializes in the study of race, social inequality, and/or social justice. Dr. Adrian Jaeggi’s work studying the relationship between male social status and reproductive success in non-industrial societies has been featured in Emory’s eScience Commons.
“We were surprised to learn that the correlation held up for a range of societies and their different measures for status,” says Adrian Jaeggi, an anthropologist at Emory University focused on primate and human behavioral ecology. “It doesn’t matter whether a man is a better hunter, owns more land or more livestock – men with high social status had more children compared to men with low status.”

In addition to the Krotovo film festival in Macedonia, Dr. Anna Grimshaw’s film “At Low Tide” will be screened at the 2016 American Anthropological Association meetings in Minneapolis, the Days of Ethnographic Cinema Festival in Moscow, and the Greek Ethnographic Film Festival in Athens!
